Homeschooling in Maine: the paperwork, exactly

What Maine law requires when you teach your child at home — the filings, the deadlines, the records — and what it does not require, in writing.

Maine — Recurring filing calendar

Notice: Written notice of intent to the local school unit and the Commissioner within 10 calendar days of starting; continuation letter by September 1 each later year.

Ongoing duties: 175 days of instruction in listed subjects; annual assessment (standardized test, teacher review, or portfolio review) filed with the September 1 letter.

Withdrawal from public school: no codified withdrawal procedure — a dated written notice to the school is the practice, and it creates your paper record.
